My heart is pounding in my rib cage. How could I be so clumsy. I had it in my hands one moment and the next I am watching it fall down, down, down, to the ground. Thankfully, the human on the bench barely seemed to notice when my acorn crashed to the ground next to it. Humans never seem to worry all that much about the importance of acorns, or other edible nuts. Though, they do have their own, delicious edibles, and only the small ones are any competition for acorns.
I scurry down the tree closest the human, my acorn is within site, the human engrossed with it's paper thingy. I must be careful. The smallest noise will cause the human to look in my direction and I will have to quickly make a retreat and replan. I move slowly, my tail twitching behind me to help me keep my balance even on the ground, moving around the tree and behind the sitting bench. I must move quickly now, my heart feels like it is about to burst through my chest. Regardless, I make my move, dashing out from beneath the bench, I hear the human scream, the noise high and shrill, pulling it's legs up onto the bench. I grab my acorn and shove it into my mouth. I need all my legs to continue my dash back up my tree. I race around the base of the tree until the human is out of site. I can't see it, it can't see me. But I don't slow my pace until I'm safe within my home.
Catching my breath, I pull my acorn out from my mouth. I'm safe now. I place the acorn in the pile with the rest of them. I poke my head out from my home and look back down from where I just ran from. The human is back to looking it's paper thing as if nothing ever happened. Good. It's not going to follow me. Now I can tend to finding the rest of my acorns.
