sammyphoenix: (minibots)
Fell off that horse much sooner than I had expected. Depression led to a long sickness and then life just got in the way, I fell hard and have been struggling to get going again. I have been doing little things from time to time.

A few Transformers fan arts based off of some toy images.

I even attempted to get back into painting.  I'm mostly happy with how Optimus turned out.  I'm rusty in comparison to my older works I did last summer of the minibots and one this size of Soundwave (which I don't seem to have posted here).

I'm struggling this time around with painting.  I can't get it to blend the way I want it to.  I started a painting of the Infinity Gauntlet, but so far I am extremely unhappy with it, it is currently in an art time-out.  To me, it looks blocky and muddy.  To B, it looks stylized and molten.  The fun thing about art is that everyone sees things different I guess...

I celebrated a birthday this past week. One of the gifts I received was an art book of Ilya Kuvshinov. One of the chapter blips she writes about how she had an art class that required them to turn in 50 sketches a week.  This blew my mind.  I've had a few art classes in my life, but nothing that intense.  I'm not setting any goals, but I do want to try to start doing a few quick sketches a week.  Ilya's examples in her book were mostly of people she saw on the train during her commute to school. I don't have a way to people watch like she did, so at the moment I'm using photos I'm coming across on the internet, Twitter, Instagram, clothing store adds... I'm collecting a hodgepodge of photos I hope to sketch, someday.  I've only gotten two days done.  The first day I did several sketches on one page, the second day I only did one sketch, but took up most of the page.

I really liked the full page sketch.  This evening I started the process of getting this drawing set up to paint.  Originally I was going to paint over the first sketch.  I liked it too much, though, I didn't want to risk losing that page to my poor paint skills (a fear I hope to get over someday).

I found a cheap notebook I have, I would have used printer paper if I had any around, and used my iPad as a light box and managed to trace a very shape based version of the sketch.  I then used a graphite stick to make a layer of graphite on the back of that tracing.  I put that copy on top the paper I want to use for painting and traced over the drawing again.  Now I have a simple version of the sketch ready to attempt to paint.  I have a different plan for how to paint this one, compared to my Optimus attempt. Hopefully, it will come out nicer.

*hugs*

Depression is such a life drain, isn't it? I'm sorry you're struggling with it.

I like your art! I think the Infinity Gauntlet looks powerful and deadly. Optimus looks great!

Goid luck with the painting!
